Backend Engineer (Ruby), AI Engineering: Agent Observability
GitLabRemote (Canada)
Backend Engineer (Ruby on Rails) — GitLab AI Engineering (Remote, Canada)
GitLab is hiring a Backend Engineer for its Agent Observability team — a high-visibility area at the intersection of GitLab's core platform and its AI strategy. You'll help define how AI agents interact with the full software delivery lifecycle, far beyond code generation, and establish architectural patterns for AI contributions across GitLab.
What You'll Do
- Develop, ship, and maintain features for Agent Observability and Interactions across the GitLab monolith backend and the AI gateway.
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs with reliability, scalability, and clear contracts.
- Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and ship iterative enhancements.
- Improve automated testing (RSpec and more) to strengthen quality and developer feedback loops.
- Share standards and patterns, raising the bar for responsible AI integration across the team.
- Participate in on-call rotations, root-cause analysis, and observability improvements.
What We're Looking For
- Experience building and maintaining production applications with Ruby on Rails (background jobs, APIs, data models).
- Comfort working across a mature, full-stack codebase — Python backends or Vue frontends are a plus.
- Proficiency designing REST and/or GraphQL APIs with scalability in mind.
- Strong testing discipline and attention to reliability.
- Self-directed and async-friendly — GitLab is 100% remote.
This is a defining role in AI engineering: you'll shape how the world's leading DevSecOps platform integrates agents across the entire software delivery lifecycle.
