Backend Engineer (Python) — AI-Driven Heat Pump Ecosystem, Octopus Energy (Berlin)
The Mission
Octopus Energy is a global energy-tech company driving the energy transition with innovative heat-pump solutions. Since 2022 they've been installing this sustainable technology with their own specialists — and they're building a highly automated, AI-driven ecosystem around it: intelligent job scheduling in Praxedo and Salesforce, state-of-the-art customer portals, and software that scales operational excellence.
The Role
As Backend Engineer, you're not a pure implementer — you're the architect of their automation. You'll build the customer portal for heat-pump customers, integrate new systems and gradually replace legacy third-party tools, develop and operate standalone services and APIs, and help shape their engineering platform: observability, CI/CD, and modern development practices.
What You'll Bring
- 4–6 years building production backend systems; Python is home (FastAPI, Django, or Flask)
- API-first mindset: you build and operate REST APIs with OAuth 2.0/JWT auth and scalable integrations
- Integration experience: webhooks, retry logic, robust error handling
- Frontend awareness: you can build React or Next.js surfaces against your own APIs
- AI-native: you use tools like Claude or Copilot daily and take ownership of the code you ship
- Generalist streak: comfortable crossing backend, integrations, and small frontend tasks
The Stack
Python, FastAPI · Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind · Salesforce (SOQL, Apex), PostgreSQL · Docker, GitHub Actions, AWS, Vercel, Hetzner · OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, Okta. Nice-to-have: observability tooling, deep SQL, Infrastructure as Code, LLM/MCP tooling.
Why Octopus
They're redefining the trade — moving from rigid processes and manual work to a tech-led future, with the goal of making global energy 100% sustainable. Green energy, green karma: competitive work in a company that pairs engineering excellence with real climate impact.
If you love owning products from first idea to go-live and want your code to fight climate change, this is the role.
